The lute in uncharted waters
This album has been described as crossover music. It is. For those accustomed to a conventional lute repertoire this may come as a surprise/shock. Ronn McFarlane takes the lute to other soundscapes usually associated with multi string guitars, helped no doubt by some engineering in the recording studio. I like it when artists push the boundaries and many of the compositions on Indigo Road are satisfying listening. I particularly enjoy Cathedral Cave and Dowland's Goodnight. Several tracks have a strong Celtic influence, while others border on Country Folk. I only tend to switch off when the music becomes a bit New Age. By that I mean drifting without a centre. Definitely worth a listen if you're looking for something new. It also made me further appreciate how good Dowland and many of is contemporaries were as experimental composers.more....
