French Romantic Rarities
D'Indy is generally known for his Symphony on a French Mountaineers Song and very little else. This CD has examples of his very earliest and latest work. The early Italian symphony was writen during his sojourn in Rome as winner of the Prix de Rome and shows the influence of Mendelsohnn and Schumann. It is well put together but not particularly distinguished thematically. The late Concert is a much more sophisticated piece with 2 crisp outer movements and a lovely delicate slow middle movement. Both pieces are well played and even better recorded by Timpani. In summary a disc for those after rounding out their late Romantic French collection.more....
