This album shows Say's wonderful talent for blending jazz and "classical" elements. "Dervish in Manhattan" is firmly rooted in jazz while my favorite composition, the violin sonata, is more classical in form. Or so it would seem. It's a sonata; it's in movements. But it employs some highly inventive uses of the instruments for haunting effects. Throughout this album runs Say's delightful sense of humor, his whimsicality, his fearless expression of subtle emotions.
There is no other composer out there who is anything like Say. Well, maybe I can see some similarities to Carter Pann in the playfulness and inventiveness. This guy is diversely talented and well worth listening to many times over. Bravo!more....
