I was first introduced to Ezio Pinza on my father's old wind-up gramophone from his collection of 78rpm discs. This was also my introduction to many famous arias and classical pieces - particularly those from Mozart (even if Pinza did sing them in Italian rather than German).
I was overcome with nostalgia upon hearing this album - even though it has been cleaned up, you can still hear some of the background noise!
I haven't heard Ezio Pinza for many years, and it was wonderful being reintroduced to his wonderful bass voice. He has to be one of the greatest. His style is clearly different from the German and Russian basses, and this makes his rendition of Verdi and Bellini particularly good, not to mention his version of "The calf of gold" from Gounod's 'Faust'. My favourite!more....
