Before Lepo Sumera died suddenly in 2000 at the age of 50, he composed six symphonies, and here we have fine recordings of his first three symphonies. I suspect these works will delight some and dismay others. They are rhapsodic yet abstract, vague yet vast. Communicating light, they are (to a certain degree) minimalist - sometimes barely a sound can be heard. For me, the motion of the music suggests "water" in all its natural manifestations: from clouds to drips to trickling streams to waterfalls to surging seas to ripples (et al). There's a simplicity here, a lucidity, a fluid wisdom that wants to remain innocent, fresh. These works are a genuine attempt to capture something new in symphonic form.
