Pupil of Bruckner, friend of Mahler
Hans Rott was a pupil of Bruckner and a friend of the young Mahler. Unfortunately he fell victim to mental illness in his twenties and died in an asylum leaving few works. His symphony is an amazing piece, the Scherzo sounds for all the world like an early composition of Mahler, with its use of folk-material, and its nocturnal and sardonic mood. The other three movements of this symphony are more Brucknerian. The whole work has a tremendous vitality and momentum. Anyone who likes Bruckner or Mahler or late C19 symphonies should listen to it.more....
