In 1947, Ormandy and the Philadelphia left RCA Victor signed with Columbia. Their first session comprised the Brahms 4th and Beethoven 7th symphonies, both recorded in one day! In 1950, they made what seems to be the first recording of Prokofiev's recent 6th Symphony. As was common at that time, it was issued as 5 78rpm shellacs and an LP. I don't know which was used here, but the sound is fairly smooth, with only a sightly shallow tone betraying its 60 years. A very fine, powerful reading.
The recording of the much lighter 7th followed in 1953, around the time of the composer's death. Ormandy and the orchestra enjoy the more relaxed melodic writing, as hopefully will present-day audiences.
