KODALY, Z.: Psalmus Hungaricus / Peacock Variations (LPO, Solti) (1954)
Kodaly's Psalmus Hungaricus of 1923 also deserves to be heard more often in all its fiery glory AND IN ENGLISH . As Kodaly's first major successful work, Psalmus Hungaricus was written for the 50th anniversary of the union of the towns of Obuda, Pest, and Buda to form Budapest. The Psalmus Hungaricus is also however a work of defiance turning to hope. The first two movements are vehement expressions of bitterness and anger whereas the last two movements express hope, faith, and the affirmation of life. It deserves to be performed and appreciated as the powerful and emotionally riveting masterpice that is. However its lack of existence in both performance hall and recording studio is most probably linked to it only being available (except for this version from what i can find) in Hungarian. Let us hope some adventurous conductor will dust off this piece in the future, and audiences will again get to enjoy Psalmus Hungaricus IN ENGLISH.more....
