Rolling shamanic drums signal the beginning of Kalevi Aho's 12th symphony entitled Luosto. With the drumming comes the clarion calls and we move into a vividly painted landscape. This is a deep orchestral work which evokes ancient passions and naturalistic endeavours. In its veins runs a mystical-magical blood. Movement I The Shamans captures the primitive verve of a pagan ritual. Movement II Winter Darkness & Midsummer summons the harsh beauty of the vast Laplandian terrain. Movement III Song in the Fells introduces competing male and female voices who chant seemingly wordless requests. In Movement IV Storm in the Fells a wind machine used as the untamed power of a passing tempest is ferociously depicted. Up there with Aho's best.more....
