Molter, a relatively obscure late-baroque, early-classical composer, wrote prolifically as was the custom of the times. He knew Vivaldi, Albinoni and Marcello, having visited Italy twice, but relatively few of his works survive or have been published. Given the mechanical limitations of the early clarinet, Maestro Kriikku plays these little concertos on a ‘period’ instrument. Averaging 11 minutes, these are pleasant, three-movement affairs of no great consequence, yet are welcome additions to the repertoire. In the great Mozart concerto, he plays a basset-clarinet as has become customary in recent years. This is an exemplary rendition of this masterpiece that compares favourably with the best of them.
