Not the Spontini we all know & love?
Any opera-goer who has not already heard this music and may be expecting something of the French theatrical grandeur of 'La Vestale' may be taken aback by this example of Neapolitan jeu d'esprit. It was in fact Spontini's first success and was indeed mounted in Naples, securing Spontini's succession to Cimarosa there. The Neapolitan Court's flight to Palermo at the turn of the XVIIth Century soon led to Spontini's move to Paris and the influence of Gluck - and the splendours of spectacle and style of Parisian opera of the day. That 'Li puntigli delle donne' does not conform to such expectations should not put off any lover of Paisiello, Cimarosa, Mayr, Mercadante or early Donizetti - this opera is in the best traditions of Neapolitan 'buffa' romp, with a wealth of cheerful melodies, sparkling ensembles and sheer youthful zest. Alberto Zedda can be relied upon for stylish and idiomatic direction of his tried and tested team of soloists; while his orchestra is a cut above the average theatre band - as is the recording. Whether or not you estimate 'La Vestale' and 'Olympie', do not let preference or prejudice come between you and the enjoyment of this delightful example of its genre.more....
