An interesting album of rare music
The two composers featured here are both rarely heard, both Danish, and more or less contemporary, but they write subtly different music. The works by Gerson are beautifully crafted and excellently orchestrated, yet they are richer in surface beauty than in deep emotion. (Though I do catch myself singing the tunes after the works have finished!)
The symphony by Kunzen, on the other hand, is as deep, I would say, as Mozart's K550 (in the same key), full of a genuine inspiration and passion. It's also available (in a different performance) on a Dacapo album from ClassicsOnline, coupled with more Kunzen: I have reviewed that album as well.
The performances here, on period instruments, and with violins separated to left and right, are pretty ideal, with a nice acoustic, and good detail. And, goodness me, the price is rather good.
