A wonderful idea not fully realized
As a new grandparent, I welcomed the opportunity to introduce my grandson to the classical repertoire (He's not a year old, yet).
In this case, the idea of being rocked to sleep to Brahms/Schubert by Vermont wintery nights was most appealing.
It turned out to be Bizet. Not so bad, I guess, although I swear, when I think about it, I hear the habanera—accelerating rocker dips and nods at bedtime...
In the main, this collection did what I wanted it to do—provided soothing music that otherwise might not be encountered by a nouveau-né.
But I found that what I REALLY wanted and anticipated was more familiar melodies, done more simply. Recorder renditions, simple strumming, maybe? Flute/harp ONLY...? Humming?
Somehow the renditions here were at one and the same time too grandiose (full orchestra) for the stated purpose—and yet not familiar enough by half.
Like, where was the lullaby from "Hansel and Gretel"?
We have yet to get the Vermont Report. Perhaps the little boy is snoring away, having been zonked by—who was it?—an obscure melody (to me, not to my grandson) from Jährenfelt.
