Some of the Best of VW's Choral Work
I tried to write my senior thesis on the Mass in G, but my adviser thought that it was insubstantial and I settled on the Fourth Symphony instead. Of course, my adviser was wrong; I have loved this piece since I first heard it 35 years ago and it has much to offer any listener or scholar. It has the many of the modal harmonies that characterize Vaughan Williams' writing.
This is an outstanding performance, as are most of the motets also recorded. The chorus shows discipline, the voices are beautifully blended and reflects all in the "Anglican choral sound" that I love.
I had not heard the two motets, which used the tune St. Anne, "Lord, Thou Hast been our Refuge" and "O How Amiable"; so, I guess they might be my favorites right now anyway.
