The Music of Divara -Wasser und Blut

Sound symbolism in Divara - Wasser und Blut is expressed in colour and in symbolic quotations from existing music. Fate, fatality and prophecy of the mysterious are represented by original and inverted intervals, which can be transposed Cursing is represented by F sharp as a melodic centre or pedal-­note, also used to prefigure tragedy or an apocalyptic event. Emptiness is symbolized by harmony based on D, G sharp and A in any structure but without transposition. The progress of the Anabaptists is represented by the rhythm of an approaching march. Christ is the tonic D, the Devil the triton of this, G sharp, Death is the dominant A, notes that constitute the idea of emptiness. The Anabaptists are symbolized by the theme of a chorale from Meyerbeer's opera La prophète, a theme used by Franz Liszt in 1850 for his monumental organ work Fantasia and Fugue on Ad nos, ad salutarem undam.

Leitmotifs have a place in the drama. Rothmann has a swinging motif, a parabola, as it were, between the sound of church bells and the aura of tubular bells. Knipperdollinck has an extemporised rhythm of vital energy. Matthys has the three kinds of ascending fifths, augmented, perfect and diminished, and Jan van Leiden three violent descending fourths, perfect, diminished and augmented. The lame prophet has as leitmotif a theme with variations, of strong rhythmic contour, suggestive in its use of the high timbre of the clarinet. The variations announce his appearance on each occasion, as prophet of Jan van Leiden's future and as diabolical traitor. This diabolical aspect is presented ironically through quotations from Stravinsky's Histoire d'un soldat, heard in the music for the prophet and in that of the royal trumpeter. The presence of Waldeck is perceptible throughout the opera, although he only sings in the second and ninth scenes. He is the opponent of the Baptists and at the beginning curses Rothmann and Knipperdollinck and at his last appearance, like the Commendatore in Mozart's Don Giovanni, celebrates his revenge and the victory of the Catholics. He is distinguished by a harmony based on the notes derived from the name of Bach, B flat A, C and B natural.

Divara has no leitmotif but is characterized by a particular form of expression. She is accompanied by an orchestral texture that uses principally flutes and strings and her vocal line is in contrast to the spoken words of others. Her powerlessness is expressed in the impossibility of any real communication. Divara is compelled to support those whose cause is lost, without any possibility of influencing them. Jan van Leiden does not listen to her warnings and she can only give expression to her doubts in song. Before her death she achieves a gesture of opposition to that form of power. Finally she gives up her singing and begins, questioning, to speak directly to her God.

The Mother, Hille and Else have musical material derived from that of Divara. The voices of Hille and Else are combined with that of Divara in two duets. The vocal character of the Mother is characterized by song forms with rhythmic figures drawn from Sardinian cradle-songs.

CD1

Act I

Prelude

A religious assembly in Münster. The theatre is half in darkness. Before the curtain rises a biblical voice is heard pronouncing the words Halleluia, answered by the people, who declare that Christ lay in the bonds of death, imprisoned for our sins, but now has arisen and brought us life. The darkness is almost complete and the voice is heard swearing by Him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. The words of the prophet Daniel are heard in a clearer voice: And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven.

Scene 1

There is a discussion between Catholic, Lutheran and Anabaptist theologians. The Anabaptist Rothmann announces his mission to reform, greeted by the Catholic theologian as heresy. The Lutheran mayor urges Rothmann to think of what he is saying: it is better to avoid error than correct it. Rothmann, however, insists that better is the courage to correct, if the price is truth. Cries of heresy are followed by the mayor asking who has brought bread and wine there. Rothmann tells him that this bread and wine is for the Lord's supper. The Catholic, accusing him again of heresy, declares the Body of Christ only to be in the consecrated Host and the mayor asks Rothmann his reason for bringing bread and wine there. The Catholic calls on believers to receive on their tongues the Body of Christ: Rothmann calls on Protestants to eat the bread, drink the wine, in memory of Christ. Baptists and Catholics join in the two kinds of celebration, while the Lutherans hesitate. Rothmann reproaches them. The mayor demurs, and the Catholic tells him to join with him against those who wish to divide the Church and drive out these arrogant and reckless sinners. If you want war, says Rothmann, you may have it here and now.

A quarrel seems about to follow, when a mother comes forward, carrying a new-born baby, seeking baptism for the boy, who is dying Rothmann refuses to baptize a child with no understanding. The mother pleads with him, but Rothmann explains to her his reason for rejecting infant baptism. The priest invites her to come to him, but she says she is not a Catholic, as her parents were. The Lutheran mayor calls her to him, but she still asks Rothmann to baptize her son. He refuses, telling her that this is not a market, where bargains can be made. The priest invites her again, but she insists that that is not her faith. The mayor urges her to accept Lutheran baptism for the boy, but she says that must be his own decision. If the child dies unbaptized, he will not see God, the mayor tells her, but she insists that God sees her child, and they are bad theologians if they believe otherwise.

Scene 2

Knipperdollinck enters with two of the Catholic cathedral clergy as hostages. The mayor is horrified at such a sin, but Knipperdollinck tells him that God has too many clergy in his service and the people too few: the priests will remain his hostages until the roads are unblocked and confiscated goods returned. The priest of the first scene protests at this heresy and threatens excommunication. Rothmann's answer is that excommunication from his church may be possible but not from belief in Christ: Knipperdollinck maintains the necessity of purification by baptism. The priest objects to this heretical repetition of baptism, but Knipperdollinck puts aside any discussion: they are hungry and the hostages will serve to raise the siege. The mayor points out that the prisoners must remain in their care, but Rothmann objects that his power is secular and this is a religious quarrel.

Bishop Waldeck enters, accompanied by religious, and demands to know who has dared treat his clergy in this way. Knipperdollinck in turn demands the opening of the roads and restoration of their goods. The Bishop insists on a return of the people to the Church and the immediate release of the prisoners. Knipperdollinck's reply is to promise dead clergy rather than living people, unless his demands are met. The mayor proposes a compromise and tells them to lay aside their weapons and to be tolerant of one another, until the Emperor orders otherwise. Knipperdollinck still insists on his demands and Rothmann adds that the Bishop is concerned with the cathedral and monastery, but they are concerned with the people.

The Bishop is forced to give way, in view of the Emperor's decision, but warns them that the Church bides its time: they will pay three and thirty times for these offences: as Bishop he may forgive, but as a Prince he will not forget: he curses them both. Knipperdollinck's rejoinder is that the Devil cannot damn a Christian: his curse is a blessing, adds Rothmann, and both of them mock the curse of the Bishop, who withdraws as the two priests are set free.

Scene 3

The lame prophet appears, crying out and knocking at the doors of the houses: Come, prepare the way of the Lord: the last day is at hand: come, people of, but from Holland, a land of great wisdom, there comes yet the great prophet, the prophet of all Baptists. So shall our eyes at last see Christ, the people answer. The lame prophet repeats his message, to which the people add a promise to be good and pure, honest and holy. The prophet continues, declaring the hour now at hand when Jesus Christ will come, and the Day of Judgement, announcing now the approach of Jan Matthys. The people are seized by religious enthusiasm, as Matthys enters, followed by the handsome apostle Jan van Leiden and his wife Divara.

Matthys greets the people of Münster, city of hope, dwelling of the righteousness of God: he has come from Holland, where Melchior Hoffman, master of them all, suffers ignominious imprisonment: Münster is blessed among all cities, since it has been chosen by the Lord to be the New Jerusalem of the Elect. The people greet this with cries of joy and Rothmann welcomes Matthys, since now their fates are joined together. Knipperdollinck adds his greeting Matthys replies, addressing them both as pillars of the faith, foundations of the new altar of Christ, which they will build together: like the four evangelists, they too must be four, with the apostle Jan van Leiden. He leads him forward, presenting him to the people. Now Divara speaks to the women of Münster, as his bedfellow, urging them to his service, while the people admire her beauty. Leiden speaks, telling them how God leads them by the hand where he will, making of an imperfect baby a grown man, and of the weakest the strougest. Divara repeats her own exhortation and the people their cries of enthusiasm.

Rothmann now tells the people that the time has come that prophecies will be fulfilled: he hears, like the thunder of a great iron door, the pages turn on which their names are written in the Book of the World. Knipperdollinck declares that the right hand of God will choose them and the left cast their enemies into the abyss. Rothmann continues to address his brothers in the Lord, for whom the doors of a new world open, but to enter in one thing is lacking. Baptism, interrupts the lame prophet. Knipperdollinck and Rothmann kneel at the feet of Matthys, seeking baptism, joined by the people. Matthys asks if these are mere words, but all assert their faith. He commands water, which is brought, and they are baptized, then helping Matthys and Jan van Leiden to baptize the rest, who declare the grace and peace of God, their Father, to be with them and all men of good will.

Matthys addresses the people, now that they are baptized and among the Elect, explaining the will of God: the chosen people will live in Münster as the first Christians did in Jerusalem: day and night their doors will be open: the possessions of each are the possessions of all, with none claiming that anything is theirs: all sins are forgiven and forgotten: money is abolished, coins confiscated: before the eyes of the Lord there is neither crooked nor straight, neither high nor low, neither near nor far: the richest among men is a beggar before the Lord and a poor beggar is a rich man. Jan van Leiden adds his own words to this, telling the brethren that money comes from the Devil's arse, and what they carry in their purses is Satan's shit. He bids them empty their purses and coffers and free themselves from that hellish stench. He takes off his cloak and lays it on the ground, and the people begin to throw down their money onto it, declaring their hands at last white and pure as manna in the wilderness. He urges them on and Divara tells them how the blind do not see nor the deaf hear, but those who do not hear tell those who do not see of the movements of heaven and the colours of the rainbow. Jan van Leiden's exhortations continue. Now Matthys points out a further trace of this poison, in books, paintings and statues: the Lord spoke to him, he tells them, bidding him burn all the books in His city, so that only the Word of God may be read and heard: I am the Lord: he urges them to burn, to hack and shatter, so that no lying words, no coloured stone nor painted idol remain. A pyre is made, on which books and other things are burned, as Matthys incites the people, who affirm that in the house of the Lord there is only a place for God. Divara declares that from the dead eyes of the blind fall tears that touch the deaf with the hand and lead to the mouth: they come to understand what the ears can never understand.

The lame prophet seeks baptism too, telling Matthys who he is: that he is lame is obvious: that he is a prophet must wait until the day when all prophecies are fulfilled: many wicked tongues proclaim him a cursed prophet. Matthys sees in him a lame man, cursed, but no prophet. The man affirms that he is the prophet who does not say what will happen, but who sees what is: he asked Matthys if he knows what people in Münster call the pillars on the right and on the left: one of the two on the left is called the Word of God and the other steadfastness in Faith. What of the pillar in the middle, asks Matthys. That is called Christ. Between the Word of God and Steadfastness in Faith is Christ, declares Divara, echoed by the people. And what is the pillar called between Christ and Steadfastness in Faith, asks Matthys. That is the Devil, he replies, his words repeated by Divara and the people. And the other, between Christ and the Word of God, asks Matthys. Death, they answer. Yes, death, says the lame prophet: everyone in Münster knows that: now baptize me. Divara and the people repeat the word death, death.

Act II

[5] Scene 4

It is snowing. The city is under siege by the soldiers of the Bishop. The voices of Catholics, Lutherans and Anabaptists come from various directions. The Anabaptists declare that Bishop Waldeck prowls about their walls like a raging wolf, intending revenge and forced obedience to his Church. Matthys tells them that the enemy of the Lord is not only outside the walls but also within in their houses: those who have refused baptism must be chased away.

The Catholics are heard comparing Bishop Waldeck to an avenging archangel who will free them from these Anabaptists, doubly perverse, doubly heretical. Matthys proclaims again the word of the Lord: hasten, since the time of blood has come: the sound of the knife is heard on the grinding-stone, terror strikes the cursed animals in flight, but His arm will reach them, wherever they fly.

The Lutherans compare Bishop Waldeck to a leaden cloud that brings a storm: after the thunder of war he brings rain to the land. Matthys continues: if you wake in the middle of the night, not knowing why, and wait, open-eyed, for sleep, then the stillness and darkness bring ideas, so your faith grows weary, with mortal fears, and you are like a child lost in the woods, surrounded by wolves: but if you trust in the Lord, the stillness becomes His voice and the darkness a dark page of the Book: then rise, like Lazarus, but a living man is dead if God does not come to him and say: Rise up and walk. You have risen and opened your window, you have not felt the biting cold air: looking down you saw the camp-fire of Waldeck's army, and you heard God speak: Rise up and walk.

Jan van Leiden tells him he has been dreaming and Matthys, overheard now by the lame prophet, says that what to the humble is a humble dream has meaning for a prophet. Jan van Leiden asks him what the Lord's command means and Matthys tells him that the Lord wants him to open the window: He showed him the camp-fire of the Catholics and said: Rise up and walk. They must find new meaning in the old words of the Lord: Rise up and fight is the Lord's will: they must assemble their men and make a sortie, meeting the enemy on an open field. Jan van Leiden warns him that the Lord did not say this so that they should fight all together against the Catholics but spoke only to Matthys. One man cannot fight a whole army, Matthys replies, but Leiden goes on to say that he need not be quite alone, since every captain has a troop, and he has with him the power of the Lord. Matthys accepts this interpretation and plans to make a sortie with a small band of soldiers, turning Waldeck's might to dust and ashes. He does not want the people to witness his glory, for glory belongs to God alone. God be with you, he says, and accompanied by some soldiers he goes out, leaving Jan van Leiden alone.

Jan van Leiden muses on this final greeting: the Lord has already decided the outcome of the battle and His designs are impenetrable: He does not stand in your way and you are appointed to die: as God has willed what has happened, also what will happen is the fruit of His will: we are deceived if we think we can force Him to pronounce His last judgement: all judgements of God are final, none the last: Matthys said God be with you: God knows the reason.

Scene 5

The lame prophet comes from his hiding-place and approaches Jan van Leiden, asking where Matthys is going with the soldiers. God has told him to make a sortie with these men, Jan van Leiden replies. Half a dozen against a whole army, the other asks. Half a dozen men and God. God is in men, and ten thousand men have ten thousand more of God: Jan Matthys is going to his death. Jan van Leiden asks what right he has to say do not go, if God says: Rise up and walk. When God told Lazarus to rise from the grave and go, Lazarus obeyed and was no longer bound by the bonds of death. And did you then want to help Matthys escape from the bonds of life, asks the prophet. Soon they will know if that was the will of God. Or your will, rejoins the lame prophet. I am the one who carries out His will, says Jan van Leiden. The Lord led me to Münster, do not forget, and as a prophet, as you call yourself, you should proclaim it.

Divara suddenly appears, disturbed by the forcible expulsion of the innocent. My husband, she begins, we have not come here from Holland for you to turn into a messenger of death: save these old people and children, dying of cold and want. Jan van Leiden tells her not to interfere in matters that concern the angel of God's justice, but she answers that she knows him not as an angel but as a man. One day you will know me as I am, he replies. She tells him that she will never see him as other than God's creature and like her in that, a creature of the Lord, and that death inevitably leads to death.

Rothmann preaches, recalling how there were no greater champions that defeated the army of Holofernes, but only Judith, who saved the people of Israel after a siege of thirty-four days: she laid aside her widow's clothes, anointed herself with oil, set her hair in order and dressed in her finest clothing and jewellery, so that all were amazed at her beauty. She went to Holofernes and when he had drunk and was asleep, she struck off his head. The besiegers fled and Judith returned home with the head of… Jan Matthys, interrupts the lame prophet. While Rothmann has been preaching, Hille Feiken has been re-enacting the biblical story, killing Bishop Waldeck in the very moment of seduction, but as he finishes an Anabaptist soldier appears with the head of Matthys on a pole.

[7] Scene 6

The people gather, seeking the reason for the sounding of the trumpet that has called them from their work and the defence of the city. They are joined by Rothmann, Knipperdollinck, Divara and the lame prophet. Jan van Leiden speaks, accusing them of lack of trust in God and in him: it has pleased the Lord to call Jan Matthys to Him, praised be the Lord. Come to me, that is what the Lord said to Jan Matthys, adds the lame prophet. Knipperdollinck assures him that they are strengthened by the example of Matthys and Rothmann claims that God will grant victory only if there are as many proofs of faith in the Book of Reckoning as there are people in Münster. Jan van Leiden tells them that the death of their brother Matthys is a sign and that the Lord has enlightened him and will enlighten them, so that they see in him the successor of Jan Matthys. The prophet so proclaims him, and the others acknowledge him. He declares the godless city council abolished, to be replaced by twelve men, appointing them as Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah. Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher. Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph and Benjamin: he will be their leader and father, as Jacob was for the twelve judges from the stem of Israel. Seond to him will be Knipperdollinck, the governor, while Rothmann will be Rothrnann. The people acknowledge Jan van Leiden as the mouth and tongue of the Lord, his word to be law in Münster. Jan van Leiden orders that only the righteous have a place in the new church, with death to blasphemers who speak rebellious words, raising their voices against their own fathers, not obeying the commands of the Lord, to the malcontent who plot rebellion, who make groundless complaints, to the libertine, licentious and above all adulterers. The Lord wills that we follow the example of the patriarchs. In the Apocalypse the Apostle John wrote: Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads and there were sealed an hundred and forty four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. These are the chosen, twelve thousand from each tribe. He goes on to point out that no more and no less than this number will be chosen, but that Münster, the new Jerusalem, does not have this number, which would not soon be reached, had not the Lord vouchsafed his new will. Which, asks the lame prophet. Jan van Leiden goes on to explain that polygamy will be introduced so that the angel may seal on the forehead the chosen that, dressed in white and carrying palm branches, they may cry out with a loud voice and sing: Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. The people echo this, and Jan van Leiden continues commanding that all who are marriageable should marry, single women accepting the first man to propose so that the kingdom of God may be re-established in purity of fellowship and without fleshly lust. The men accept the will of God, while the women ask if they are to be treated as animals, having no say as to with whom they may couple.

Divara intervenes, recalling how Hille set out to kill Waldeck, as Judith slew Holofernes: if the Lord willed that she should come back safely, should she now be taken to wife by any man against her will? The women agree that she should not. Divara goes on to explain that the angel of Revelation has sealed her and that she the Lord has chosen cannot be chosen by a mere man fairer if she herself choose the man she wants to marry. The women concur. If her husband takes another wife, the Lord must allow them to support one another, as sisters. Knipperdollinck adds that if the compulsion of a law, also form God, has greater power than the compulsion of freedom, coming from God, then God would be against God. Rothmann declares that the Lord has determined that polygamy should be introduced so that the necessary number of the elect should be reached quickly, for sealing by the angel.

Jan van Leiden announces that he will be the first to choose, followed by Knipperdollinck, then Rothmann and the other men, no man to take more wives than he. Knipperdollinck considers it better to be chosen than to choose, while the lame prophet hopes that none will refuse him: he is lame, but a prophet and through and through a man: God has commanded and must be obeyed by men. Jan van Leiden tells Divara that she will be the first of his wives and must see to the others, grains of sand, shifted by the sea where it will. She replies that they are all in the hands of the Lord, who is the sea and the tide, hoping that He will not withdraw from the shore and leave them high and dry. Rothmann urges haste and Jan van Leiden takes Divara by the hand and goes along the row of women, choosing the fairest. The last and youngest, Else, is horrified, when her hand is taken. Divara kisses and embraces the women. Rothmann and the lame prophet follow Jan van Leiden's example. Some women seem delighted, others show silent opposition. Only Knipperdollinck does not move. The people repeat the words of scripture: Salvation to our God that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. While the ceremony is still continuing, four soldiers burst in bearing a bier on which a body lies. Divara approaches and uncovers the face of Hille, whose voice is now heard from among the crowd, asking who, of the men of Münster, will have her be his wife. Divara echoes her words and proclaims Hille as the Lamb. Hille's voice is heard again, asking who will drink of the poison on her lips, as the noise of battle echoes and the Catholic forces attack the city.

CD2

Act III

[1] Scene 7

The people ask what they should eat, wear or drink: their Heavenly Father knows their need: first they must seek His Kingdom on earth and His Judgement, then the rest will be added unto them. Divara adds that sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. The voices of the men are heard, celebrating victory against the Bishop's men. The people give praise to the Lord, the conqueror in the battle. Jan van Leiden praises His revelation and proclaims himself king in Münster, an image of Heaven, chosen by the Lord as His arm and His voice: the lame prophet must crown him. The latter claims that generations to come will say that it was for this that he came into the world to Münster, the instrument of his glory. Jan van Leiden addresses them as judges of Israel, bidding them hand over their swords, since from henceforth there will be no power equal to his: they must stand on each side of the throne, serving him, as the angels of Heaven serve the Lord. The lame prophet orders the people to greet their king, which they do. Knipperdollinck, however, asks the citizens why, if this is a city chosen by God to be the new Zion, the king should be a man not from Münster. Jan van Leiden tells him not to proclaim any revelation that he thinks God has made to him, since God speaks through him aloud to Münster. Knipperdollinck reminds him that they are all the chosen people of God and all equal before him. Jan van Leiden warns him, threatening to sever his head from his body, but Knipperdollinck tell him not to deceive himself, since severed heads may be set back again. Jan van Leiden will give God the trouble. Knipperdollinck complains that Jan has forbidden him to tell what has been revealed, but cannot prevent the revelation that they both must die. The lame prophet interrupts, asking if he will not believe this revelation and kill Knipperdollinck on the spot, or does he believe he will die too at that moment. Rothmann tries to prevent the quarrel: Knipperdollinck is right to insist on their equality before the Lord, but as long as Jan van Leiden is their king, he must answer for them before the throne of God. Jan van Leiden announces the quarrel over and tells the people that he is now the Royal Baptist jurisdiction, to which they owe obedience. The people shout out, wishing Jan van Leiden long life, the King of the Baptists.

[2] Postlude

The words of the opening Prelude are repeated. Christ lay in the bonds of death, imprisoned for our sins. A voice announces: I swear by Him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half: and when He shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all of these things shall be finished. The voice of Daniel follows: So heard I swear the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river. Voices are heard singing Halleluia. The prophet Daniel continues: He held up his right hand and his left hand unto Heaven, and I heard him swear. The voice proclaims: the wicked shall do wickedly and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. He has risen and brought us life, sings the choir.

[3] Scene 8

It is afternoon. The people suffer hunger and need and seek to know the reason for the sound of the trumpet, for which they have left their work and the defence of the city. Jan van Leiden accuses them of lack of trust in the power of God and in him: they do not believe Waldeck, who is trying to reduce them by force of arms and hunger: the Lord will multiply the food a thousand fold for those for whom the table is laid: for this they must make themselves ready. The people call on their Lord, their rock and refuge, and Jan van Leiden calls them to eat of this food of the soul, the banquet of the Redeemer on Mount Zion The people call again on the Lord, having ashes in place of bread and their drink mingled with tears. Jan van Leiden tells the elect that this is the hour of triumph, not of complaint: the Lord is with them and has not deserted them, as He did not desert Job in his need. They must have courage and sing unto the Lord a new song, praising Him in singing and dancing. He bids Knipperdollinck set the example and dance. War without and here we dance, the latter exclaims. I have told you to dance, rejoins Jan van Leiden, and will not say it gain: if I bid you dance, you dance, since sadness and vexations find no grace in the eyes of the Lord. Some of them reluctantly start to dance, as he urges them all on. Such power cannot be the will of God, Knipperdollinck claims, and Rothmann adds that the Lord has appointed due correction but not groundless punishment. Jan van Leiden, however, declares himself the one to decide in God's name: when he sees how wretchedly these people turn to the dance, who are no use in the defence of the city, he has decided that all these should be expelled: the Lord can take care of their safety, if He will: if the judgement of God should cast them out, then they will die and Münster will be redeemed through their blood. Else protests at this cruelty: this is only the will of Jan van Leiden, not of God, to be king: he has been brought there by the Devil.

Divara intervenes, as the first wife of Jan van Leiden. First, second or last, you are all equal, he affirms. She agrees, all sisters, not rivals as he thought. Else tells him that his desire as a man, directed at each of them, is within him but shared by them and he does not realise who they are, the women of Münster. Divara repeats her claim that they are sisters, not rivals. Jan van Leiden tells them they are women, that is enough for him, and tells Divara to be gone. Divara tells Else to make her escape.

[4] Scene 9

Else starts to run away, followed by Jan van Leiden, but suddenly they stop. No-one, she tells him, can escape their own death. Clever woman, he exclaims, as he stabs her. She dies in the arms of Divara, while Jan van Leiden gives a sign to the soldiers to expel the old, the women and children. Lord, why hast Thou made us, asks Divara? The cup in God's left hand brims over, with the blood of these offerings. The people repeat their earlier words: Between the Word of God and Steadfastness in Faith is Christ; between Christ and Steadfastness in Faith is the Devil. Divara laments, asking how long her soul will be filled with sorrow, seeking an answer from God. Between Christ and the Holy Word of God stands death.

The lame prophet and the Catholic priest appear again on the stage. The former speaks: And in the end God is Catholic and we never knew. Perhaps God is not Catholic: perhaps He is no more than a word, the other replies. Perhaps he is not Lutheran, rejoins the prophet, perhaps he is no more than a word: what must we do, here on earth. Nothing and everything, says the priest, nothing is made from everything and everything from nothing. If that is so, says the lame prophet, then everything we do is of equal worth, worth nothing. The priest agrees. If God is only a name, the prophet goes on, then betrayal counts for nothing before his eyes. No-­one whom God protects can be called a betrayer or godless. If God, the prophet suggests, is not on the side of Münster, then betraying Münster is no betrayal of God. Every human deed takes place in darkness, the priest continues, and both declare the light of God too weak for their eyes. There is no Devil but man, proposes the priest. Hell is here on earth, rejoins the prophet. Betrayal? Betrayal! Amen!, and both go to open the gates of the city to the besiegers.

The people are heard singing to the Lord, their strength, their rock, their safety, their refuge, their shield. Jan van Leiden expresses his joy that they turn to their Heavenly Father using the same words that they owe to their king, on earth their shield and protection: they must forget their pain, eat bread and drink wine, sing so that the Devil hears them and will not believe that they are hungry. The people start to sing, with difficulty, then louder. He tells them to dance, and they do so, ever more wildly. Suddenly the soldiers of Waldeck's army break in. The people of Münster have no defence. Men and women are killed, while some run away. Jan van Leiden, Knipperdollinck and Divara are taken prisoner. Rothmann is mortally wounded in the confusion.

Bishop Waldeck comes in, followed by the mayor and his associates. The Bishop offers praise to God, determined now to trample on the hydra of heresy: those condemned should not hope for the mercy of the Lord, since He himself will punish them all: no tears will take the knife from the neck or prevent their being mown down: they must recant their errors before the representative of Holy Mother Church. He calls for Rothmann, and they mayor points to where he lies. Condemned, he pronounces, and turns to Knipperdollinck, recalling how he told them that they would pay three and thirty times for their offence: now Knipperdollinck must pay the penalty. Bidden to abjure, he refuses and is taken away. Waldeck turns to Jan van Leidew: Praise be to you now for all these dead, king of Münster, king of nothing: do you abjure. Jan van Leiden answers that he abjures error: if Waldeck spares his life, he offers his services in bringing the Anabaptists back to loyalty to the Emperor. Waldeck finds him worth less than his governor, Knipperdollinck, and orders a cage for this filthy swine. The mayor drags Divara before the Bishop, who now will see whether the queen is as good as the king, bidding her to abjure, which she refuses to do. He tells her that her husband has already done so, but she answers that he must meet his reckoning before the Lord when the time comes: she has no such hope and asks how God can allow this slaughter that has been since the beginning of the world, how he permits hatred between faiths, the killing of peoples and endless suffering: why is natural death not enough for him. Waldeck orders her immediate execution. The people repeat the words of the angel, Salvation to our God that sitteth on the throne, and to the Lamb. The women declare that the Lord has always proclaimed his will through the mouth of men and the people announce themselves the Lamb of the Lord, that takes away the sins of the world. As she dies, Divara asks the Lord when the day will come that He will say directly, face to face, what is important above all for women. Divara is dead, sing the people, here is the Lamb.

(Täufer und Katholiken feiern auf zweierlei Arten das Abendmahl. Die Lutheraner zögern. neigen aber dazu, sich den Katholiken anzuschließen. Zum Bürgermeister und seinen Anhängern.)

Ihr nennt euch Protestanten, ihr Lutheraner, aber ich sehe, daß euer Sinn sich eher den Katholiken zuwendet. In Gedanken verratet ihr uns schon jetzt.

Bürgermeister

In unsere Hände wurde übergeben, nach dem Willen des Volkes, die Befugnis, zu wägen, zu teilen und zu zählen.

Theologe

Vereint euch mit uns gegen jene, welche die Zersplitterung der Kirche Christi wünschen. Laßt uns vertreiben aus der Stadt die Überheblichen, die Unbesonnenen, die sündigen gegen das Wort Gottes.

Rothmann

Wenn ihr den Krieg wollt, so sollt ihr ihn haben, hier und jetzt.

(Der Streit droht, sich zu einem Kampf auszuweiten, als eine Mutter sich mit ihrem Neugeborenen im Arm durch die Menge drängt.)

Mutter

Ich komme, daß ihr taufet meinen Sohn. Es wird ihm noch lange dauern bis zur Zeit des Brotes und Weines, sein Mund riecht nach meiner Milch, sein Geruch unterscheidet sich nicht von dem meinen.

(Zu Rothmann.) Tauf' ihn, und es wird sein, als ob du auch mich taufen würdest.

Rothmann

Dich würde ich taufen, aber nicht dein Kind, das keinen Verstand für den Glauben haben kann.

Mutter

Nach meiner Erinnerung, der Erinnerung meiner Eltern und der Erinnerung meiner Großeltern wurden immer schon die Neugeborenen getauft. So taufe mein Kind, damit es nicht stirbt.

Rothmann

Die Taufe ist ein Bad im Wasser, das der Täufling begehrt und erhält als wahrhaftiges Zeichen, daß er für die Sünde gestorben ist. Glaubst du, daß dein Kind, so wie es jetzt an deinem Halse hängt, diese Bereitschaft äußern kann?

Mutter

Nein, das kann es nicht. Aber es darf nicht sterben!

Theologe

Komm auf diese Seite, Weib, denn uns genügt dein Glaube. Komm und dein Kind wird nicht sterben.

Mutter

Meine Eltern waren katholisch, ich bin es nicht. An wen soll ich mich wenden, damit mein Kind nicht stirbt?

Komm her zu uns, Weib, hier ist dein Glaube! Komm her und dein Kind wird nicht sterben.

(Immer noch von der Unnachgiebigkeit Rothmanns angezogen.)

So taufest du mein Kind?

Wir sind nicht auf dem Markt, wo die Preise nachgelassen werden, noch auf einer Versteigerung, wo man sie erhöht. Der Herr allein weiß, was Er von deinem Kind will.

Theologe

Komm zu uns, Weib, bringe dein Kind.

Mutter

Mein Glaube aber ist nicht bei eurer Kirche.

Bürgermeister

Komm hierher, Weib, wir sind die rechten, dein Kind zu taufen.

Mutter

Sollte mein Kind eines Tages zu euch kommen, werden es eig 'ne Schritte tragen.

Bürgermeister

Wenn es ungetauft sterben sollte, wird es Gott nie sehen.

Mutter

Ich weiß, Gott sieht mein Kind Ich weiß es. Und ihr seid sicher sehr schlechte Theologen, alle, solltet ihr wirklich glauben, Gott könne existieren, wenn auch nur eines seiner Geschöpfe ihn nicht sieht.

(Knipperdollinck tritt auf, nimmt zwei katholische Domherren als Geiseln und fesselt sie mit Band an ihre Stühle. In dem Tumult werden Tische umgeworfen.)

Bürgermeister

Knipperdollinck, bist du verrückt geworden? Gegen die Diener des Herrn Gewalt zu gebrauchen, ist eine schreckliche Sünde!

Knipperdollinck

Gott hat zu seinen Diensten der Domherren zu viele und der Menschen zu wenige. Bürgermeister, verständige Waldeck, daß diese Domherren unsere Geiseln sein werden, bis er die Sperre der Straßen aufhebt und uns die konfiszierten Waren zurückgibt.

Theologe

Ketzerei! Man wird dich exkommunizieren!

Rothmann

Aus eurer Kirche kann man exkommuniziert werden, nicht aber aus dem Glauben an Christus. (Zeigt auf Knipperdollinck.) Er wird es sein, der die neuen Läuterungen durchführt!

Sprichst du von Taufe?

Ketzerei! Man kann die Taufe nicht wiederholen!

Schluß mit dem Geschwätz! Diskutieren wir ein andermal über Theologie, soweit wir nicht verhungert ,ein werden. (Auf die Gefangenen zeigend.) Hier sind diejenigen, die unsere Straßen öffnen und unsere Waren freigeben werden.

Die Gefangenen müssen in unserer Obhut bleiben.

Ihr habt die weltliche Gewalt. Aber dies ist ein religiöser Streit.

Nein, solang ihr nicht die Gemeinden an die Kirche zurückgebt. Nimm sofort all' meinen Domherr'n die Fesseln ab!

Knipperdollinck

Statt lebendigen Gemeinden wirst du tote Domherren bekommen, wenn du nicht sofort unsere Straßen öffnest und unsere Waren freigibst.

Bürgermeister

Laßt uns zusammen eine Lösung suchen. Steckt weg eure Schwerter und Dolche! Macht den Geist des Frieden. von Habsburg zu eurem eigenen. Toleriert einander, bis daß der Kaiser etwas anderes anordnet.

Knipperdollinck

Der Bischof soll die Waren herausgeben und die Straßen öffnen lassen, dann werden wir die Geiseln freilassen.

Rothmann

Der Bischof kümmert sich um den Dom und die Klöster; wir kümmern uns um die Gemeinden!

Waldeck

Mit Rücksicht auf den hoheitlichen Willen des Kaisers, muß ich euer anmaßendes und teuflisches Angebot akzeptieren. Die Kirche wird auf ihre Stunde warten, denn ihr sollt alle bald sehen, daß nur ihr allein die Zeit gehört. Für die Beleidigungen werdet ihr dreimal und dreißig Male zahlen. Weder verzeih' ich als Bischof, noch vergesse ich jemals als Fürst! Knipperdollinck, Rothmann: seid beide verflucht!

Knipperdollinck

Der Teufel kann einen Christen nicht verfluchen!

Rothmann

Sein Fluch ist ein Segen für ihn.

Kommt, bereiten wir dem Herrn den Weg, kommt herbei, ihr Münsteraner! Denn aus Holland, einem Land großer Weisheit, kommt jetzt der große Prophet an, der Prophet aller Täufer.

So werden unsere Augen ihn endlich sehen: Christus.

Der Lahme

Kommt, bereiten wir dem Herrn den Weg: Endlich kommt der letzte Tag Kommt herbei, ihr Münsteraner! Denn aus Holland kommt nach Münster jetzt der Prophet al/er Täufer.

Sei gegrüßt, Münster, Stadt der Hoffnung, Wohnstatt der Gerechtigkeit Gottes. Aus Hollaud, wo Melchior Hoflmann, unser aller Meister, Gefängnis und Schimpf leidet, sind wir zu dir gekommen, Münster! Unter allen Städten der Welt bist du beglückt und selig, denn dich hat der Herr erkoren, das Neue Jerusalem der Auserwählten Gottes zu sein.

(Allgemeiner Jubel mit Schreien und Klatschen.)

Wir müssen gut sein und rein sein und auch ehrlich und heilig.

Rothmann

Willkommen, fan Matthys! Aber in Wahrheit empfäugt nicht Münster dich, sondern du kommst, Münster zu empfangen. Und da du Münster empfängst, empfängst du gleichzeitig uns, die wir dich erwarten, ohne von unserer Erwartung zu wissen. Endlich sind wir zusammengekommen: Heute beginnt unser gemeinsames Schicksal.

Sei du also derjenige, der uns willkommen heißt, Jan Matthys!

Nach Holland sind euer Ruhm und Kunde zu mir gelangt, Knipperdollinck und Rothmann! Säulen des Glaubens seid ihr; auf euch wird sich gründen der neue Altar Christi, den wir hier gemeinsam errichten werden. Doch wie der Evangelisten vier zu sein hatten, müssen der Säulen vier sein, die das Gewicht des Weines und des Brotes stützen werden. Und mit uns dreien wird sich vereinen, den ich mit eigenen Händen getauft und zu meinem Apostel gemacht habe, Jan van Leiden.

Frauen von Münster, seht al/e her: Ich bin es, die sich ins Bett des Manne, legt, den ihr hemmungslos begehrt Wollt ihr euch eine nach der auderen vielleicht ihm aubieten?

Gott führt uns an seiner Hand, wohin er will. Er macht aus einem unvollkommenen Säugling einen erwachsenen Mann, wandelt die äußerste Schwäche zur höchsten Kraft.

Frauen, Frauen von Münster! Frauen seht hierher, seht her, ihr Frauen. Ich bin es, die sich in sein Bett legt, ins Bett des Mannes, den ihr hemmungslos begehrt.

Bürger von Münster, es ist die Zeit gekommen, in der sich die Prophezeiungen erfüllen. Ich höre wie das Donnern einer riesigen Eisentür, die Seite sich wenden, auf der unsere Namen geschrieben sind im Weltenbuch.

Knipperdollinck

Getreue des Heiligen Geistes, die rechte Hand Gottes wird uns auserwählen, seine linke wird unsere Feinde in den Abgrund stürzen.

Rothmann

Brüder in unserem Herrn, weit schon öffnen sich die Tore der neuen Welt, die Spitze unseres Fußes nähert sich der Schwelle, das große Licht blendet uns, und doch können wir nicht eintreten, denn uns fehlt…

Der Besitz eines jeden sei der Besitz aller; und keiner wage es zu sagen: "Dies ist meins…"

Alle Schulden seien vergeben und vergessen, das Geld sei abgeschafft, die Münzen beschlagnahmt. Denn vor den Augen des Herrn gibt es weder krumm noch gerade, weder hoch noch niedrig, weder nah noch fern. Denn der reichste unter den Menschen ist ein Bettler vor dem Herrn und ein bittender Armer sein Schatzmeister.

Wißt ihr, Brüder, wo das Geld herstammt?

Leert also eure Börsen und Sparbüchsen, befreit euch von dem höllischen Gestank! Reinigt euch, reinigt euch!(Er zieht seinen Mantel aus und breitet ihn auf dem Boden aus. Wie im Rausch beginnt das Volk, alles Geld darauf zu werfen, das es bei sich hat.)

Der Herr sprach zu mir: Matthys, verbrenne alle Bücher, die du in meiner Stadt finden wirst, damit nur meine Worte in ihr gelesen und gehört werden können. Ich bin der Herr. Bürger, greift zum Feuer, greifr zur Axt, greift zum Hammer, auf daß nicht ein einziges lügenhaftes Wort, noch ein einziger gefärbter Stein noch ein einziges gemaltes Gaukelbild verbleibe. (Es wird ein Scheiterhaufen entzündet, auf dem Bücher und Gegenstände verbrannt werden.)

Wer bist du? Wovon sprichst du?

Der Lahme

Man nennt mich den „lahmen Propheten“. Daß ich lahm bin, erkennt man vofort beim Hinseh’n. Daß ich Prophet bin, da gilt's den Tag abzuwarten, den Tag, an dem alle Prophezeiungen (ob sie nun wahr sind oder falsch) sich erfüllen. Manche bösen Zungen nennen mich, manche bösen Zungen nennen mich: verfluchter Prophet!

Matthys

Du bist lahm und verrückt obendrein, aber du hast nichts von einem Propheten.

Der Lahme

Ich bin der Prophet, der nicht verkündet, was wird geschehen, sondern der sieht, was ist!

Weißt du, Matthys, weißt du, wie hier in Münster wir den Pfeiler nennen, den zur Linken und den hier zur Rechten?

Wie ein wütender Wolf, der herumschleicht um unsre Mauern, so ist Waldeck, er denkt nur noch an Rache und will uns beugen dem Gehorsam seiner Kirche. (Mit Haß) Komm doch, Bischof Waldeck, komm doch:

Waffen, Waffen, Waffen schrecklicher Tod.

Matthys

Die Feinde des Herrn sind nicht nur außerhalb der Stadtmauer, die Feinde des Herrn wohnen auch in unseren Häusern. Sie haben die Taufe verweigert: deswegen werden sie verjagt.

Chor der Kotholiken

Wie der rächende Erzengel, der die Lanze erhebt, so ist Waldeck, Waldeck, der uns befreien wird von diesen Wiedertäufern, zweimal perverser, zweimal häretischer… Komm doch, Bischof Waldeck, komm doch: Waffen, Waffen, Waffen schrecklicher Tod.

Matthys

Die Stimme des Herrn hat gesagt: „Beeilt euch, denn die Zeit des Blutes ist gekommen. Schon hört man die Klinge des Messers über den Schleifstein fahren, der Schrecken schlägt die verdammten Tiere in

die Flucht, aber Mein Arm wird sie erreichen, wohin sie auch fliehen mögen.“

Wie eine bleierne Wolke, die mit sich bringt die Stürme de, Himmels, so ist Waldeck, der nach dem

Donnerschlag des Krieges heiteren Regen tröstend ausgießt über das Land…

Wenn du mitten in der Nacht erwachst ohne zu wissen warum…

und mit offenen Augen daliegst in der Erwartung des Schlafes, der nicht zurückkehren will. Dann bevölkern sich die Stille und die Dunkelheit, so dein Glaube ermattet, mit sterblichen Ängsten; und du bist wie ein Kind verloren im Wald und von Wölfen umschlichen.

Aber wenn du vom Herrn nicht verlassen bist, verwandelt sich die Stille in Seine Stimme und die Dunkelheit in eine dunkle Seite des Buches, auf der Sein Finger weiß sein Zeichen einschreibt.

Dann erhebe dich, wie Lazarus sich erhob auf den Befehl des Herrn, denn ein jeder lebende Mensch ist eine tote Hülle, solange Gott nicht herzukommt, ihm zu sagen:

Du hast dich erhoben und dein Fenster geöffnet, du hast die kalte Luft nicht gespürt, die in deine Haut schnitt, denn du blicktest zum Himmel und zu den Sternen. Und als deine Augen zur Erde hinabstiegen, sahst du jenseits der Stadtmauer dieLagerfeuer von Waldecks Heer. Und abermals hörtest du Gott zu dir sprechen:

Du hast einen Traum lIehabt, Matthys.

(Inzwischen betritt der Lahme vorsichtig die Bühne und hört versteckt dem Gespräch zu.)

Was für die gemeinen Menschen ein gemeiner Traum ist, das ist göttliche Eingebung für die Propheten.

Leiden

Wie nun deutest du deu Befehl des Herrn?

Matthys

Der Herr wollte, dqß ich das Fenster öffne. Er zeigte mir die Lagerfeuer der Katholischen und sagte sodann:

Matthys>

Wir müssen in den alten Worten des Herrn den neuen Sinn Seines Willens suchen und finden.

Leiden

Welchen neuen Sinn, welchen Willen?

Matthys

„Stehe al!fund kämpfe“: dies hat der Herr gewollt, das ich höre. Wir müssen deshalb unsere Soldaten versammeln und einen Ausfall machen, sodaß wir auf offenem Feld die entscheidende Schlacht gegen die Katholischen schlagen.

Leiden

Bedenke, Matthys, daß Er nicht gesagt hat: „Steht auf und wandelt’, als ob wir kämpfen müßten, alle zusammen, gegen die Katholiken. Sein Wort war klar: „Steh auf“, sprach Er, und Er sprach es zu dir, „Wandle“, und wieder warst du es, zu dem Er sprach.

Matthys

So ist es, aber ein einzelner Mann kann nicht ein ganzes Heer besiegen.

Leiden

Doch, wenn Gott es will. Und du mußt nicht ganz allein in den Kampf ziehen, denn jeder Hauptmann hat ein Gefolge, und du hast hier zum unbesiegbaren Feldherrn den Herrn aller Heere.

Matthys

Gott hat deinen Geist erleuchtet und dir gezeigt, was aus Demut der meine nicht zu verstehen gewußt hat. Auf der Stelle werde ich einige Soldaten versammeln und mit ihnen den niederschmetternden Ausfall machen, der die Stadt befreien wird. Wie ein Blitz, geschleudert durch die erzürnte Hand des Herrn, werden wir Waldecks Macht zu Asche und Staub vergehen lassen.

Komm doch, Bischof Waldeck, komm doch: Waffen, Waffen, Waffen schrecklicher Tod!

Leiden

Willst du hier das Volk als Zeugen deiner Herrlichkeit?

Matthys

Die Soldaten werden mich sehen, nicht meine Herrlichkeit, denn die wahre Herrlichkeit kommt Gott allein zu. Alles übrige ist eine flüchtige Wolke und ein Rauch, der velfliegt.

Gott befohlen, Jan. (Von einigen Soldaten begleitet entfernt sich Jan Matthys, Jan van Leiden bleibt allein znrück.)

Leiden

„Gott befohlen, Jan.“ Der Herr hat den Ausgang der Schlacht schon entschieden. Seine Pläne sind undurchdringlich:

Er würde deine Schritte nicht anhalten, und seiest du auch dazu bestimmt, zu sterben. Denn so wie Gott alles gewollt hut, was bisher geschehen, so ist auch das, was noch geschehen soll, bereits die Frucht Seines Willens.

Furchtbar getäuscht wären wir alle, wenn wir meinten, es stünde in unserer Macht, Ihn zu zwingen, Sein letztes Urteil zu sprechen.

Alle Urteile Gottes sind endgültig, keines wird das letzte sein. Was würde er danach machen?

Wohin ging Jan Matthys mit den Soldaten?

Leiden

Gott hat ihm eingegeben, mit diesen Männern einen Ausfall zu machen.

Der Lahme

Ein halbes Dutzend gegen ein ganzes Heer?

Leiden

Ein halbes Dutzend Männer und Gott.

Der Lahme

Ganz ohne Zweifel ist Gott im Menschen, und daher kommt es, daß gewiß auch auf dem Schlachtfeld zehntausend Männer immer auch zehntausendmal mehr Gott haben, als jeder einzeln. Jan Matthys geht den Weg in den Tod.

Leiden

Wer bin ich, ihm zu sagen: „Geh nicht, setze dich“, wenn Gott ihm schon sagte: „Steh auf und wandle“? Als Gott dem Lazarus befahl, sich aus dem Grabe zu erheben und zu gehen, gehorchte Ihm Lazarus und die Bande des Todes umfingen ihn nicht mehr.

Der Lahme

Und du wolltest Matthys dabei helfen, sich zu lösen aus den Banden des Lebens.

Leiden

Es wird nicht viel Zeit vergehen, bis wir wissen, ob dies letztlich der Wille Gottes war.

Der Lahme

Oder war es der deine.

Leiden

Damit ich der Vollstrecker Seines Willens sei, hat mich der Herr nach Münster geführt Es täte dir gut, das nicht zu vergessen, und als Prophet, den du dich nennst, es bei jeder Gelegenheit zu verkünden.

(Divara kommt und sieht die gewaltsame Vertreibung Unschuldiger.)

Divara

Mein Gatte, wir sind nicht aus Holland hierhergekommen, damit du dich wandelst zum Boten des Todes. Rette diese Alten und diese Kinder, die vor Kälte, vor Entbehrung elend sterben.

Leiden

Mische dich nicht ein in das, was nur den Engeln der Gerechtigkeit Gottes ansteht.

Divara

Ich kenne dich nicht als einen Engel, sondern ich kenn dich als Mensch.

Leiden

Eines Tages wirst du mich als das kennen, was ich bin.

Divara

Bemühe dich nicht, es mir zu sagen, denn nie, nie werd' ich dich anders sehen als Gottes Geschöpf und daher mir gleich; denn ich bin, wie du, ein Geschöpf des Herrn. Bedenke außerdem, daß der Tod unausweichlich anzieht den Tod.

Rothmann

Und es waren keine großen Feldherren, die das Heer von Holofernes besiegten. Nein, es war Judith ganz allein, die am 34. Tag der Belagerung sich aufmachte, das Volk Israels zu retten.

Sie legte ihr Witwenkleid ab, salbte sich mit feinsten Ölen, ordnete ihre Haare wie einen Turban und kleidete sich mit ihren Festgewändern. Sie legte Armbänder und ihren ganzen Schmuck an, und alle, die sie sahen, staunten maßlo, über ihre Schönheit.

So ging sie zu Holofernes, und er wollte sie nicht wieder ziehen lassen, ohne Verkehr mit ihr gehabt zu haben. Als er aber trunken, wie noch nie in seinem Leben zuvor, auf sein Lager gesunken war, trat Judith an sein Bett, betete und schlug ihm den Kopf ab.

Da zerstreuten sich alle Belagerer in wilder Flucht. Judith aber kehrte heim und brachte ihrem Volk den Kopf des…

(Parallel zur Predigt Rothmanns beschließt Hille Feiken, die Tat der biblischen Judith nachzuahmen, und allein Bischof Waldeck gegenüberzutreten, um ihn im Moment der Verführung zu töten.)

(Ein übel zugerichteter Soldat der Wiedertäufer erscheint. Er trägt auf einen Stock getrieben den Kopf von Jan Matthys.)

Was ist geschehen? Warum ruft die Trompete? Um zu antworten deinem Rufe, haben wir sogar verlassen unsere ganze Arbeit und die Verteid'gung unserer Stadt.

(Rothmann, Knipperdollinck, Divara und der Lahme treten auf.)

Leiden

Ihr hättet es nicht getan, hättet ihr kein Vertrauen in die Macht Gottes und in mich. Dem Herrn gefiel es, unseren Bruder Jan Matthys zu sich zu rufen, gelobt sei also der Herr.

Der Lahme

„Komm zu mir“: Das ist es, was zu Jan Matthys der Herr gesagt hat!

Knipperdollinck

Stärken wir unseren Geist, Brüder, und ahmen wir jeden Tag unseres Lebens das Beispiel des Glaubens nach, das uns die Tat Matthys' gegeben hat.

Rothmann

Gott wird uns nur dann den Sieg geben, wenn Er in seinem Buch der Rechnungen auf der Seite von Münster gleich viele Beweise desselben Glaubens verzeichnet hat, wie die Stadt Einwohner zählt.

Und was machen wir jetzt?

Das Ableben unseres Bruders Matthys ist ein Zeichen und nicht die Folge einer Fehldeutnng der Worte des Herrn.

Von welchern Zeichen sprichst du?

Ist Münster die Stadt Gottes, ja oder nein?

Ja, Münster ist die Stadt Gottes.

Der Herr hat eben jetzt meinen Geist erleuchtet und wird den euren erleuchten, daß ihr in mir den Nachfolger von Jan Matthys seht.

Ich erkenne dich an als Nachfolger von Matthys.

Jan von Leiden ist Mund und Zunge des Herrn. Was er bestimmt und sagt, soll Gesetz sein in Münster.

Allein die Gerechten haben einen Platz in der erneuerten Kirche. Deshalb werde ich alle die heimsuchen, welche die Glaubenstaufe erhalten, doch von neuem in die Sünde zurückfallen. Tod also den Lästerern, die aufsässige Worte ausstoßen, die gegen ihre eigenen Väter die Stimme erheben, die den Befehlen ihrer Herren nicht gehorchen, den Mürrischen, die Aufruhr anzetteln, die grundlos Klage führen, den Lüstlingen, den Zügellosen und vor allem…den Ehebrechern!

Der Herr will, daß wir von nun an dem Beispiel der alten Erzväter folgen. Der Apostel Johannes hat in der Offenbarung geschrieben: „Verderbt nicht die Erde, nicht das Meer, noch die Bäume bis wir auf der Stirn gezeichnet haben die Knechte unseres Herrn und es werden sein hundertvierundvierzigtausend aus allen Stämmen Israels.“ Diese werden die Erwählten sein: zwölftausend aus einem jeden der zwölf Stämme und sie werden auf ihrer Stirn gezeichnet sein. Doch nicht bevor hundertvierundvierzigtausend gezählt werden können, keiner mehr und keiner weniger. Jetzt ist uns gewiß, daß Münster das neue Jerusalern ist, die gerechte, die heilige Stadt und deshalb werden hier die Auserwählten gezeichnet werden. Aber Brüder, es gibt in Münster keine hundertvierundvierzigtausend Seelen, und es würde sie nicht so bald geben, hätte mir der Herr nicht Seinen neuen Willen kundgetan.

Daß in Münster die Vielehe wiedereingeführt werde, damit der Engel mit dem Siegel des lebendigen Gottes nicht säume, uns auf der Stirn zu zeichnen. Und solcherart gezeichnet, in weißen Gewändern und mit Palmenzweigen in den Händen, werden wir rufen mit lauter Stimme und singen: „Das Heil ist bei unserem Gotte, der sitzt auf dem Throne, und bei dem Lamme.“

Alle Heiratsfähigen sind verpflichtet, die Ehe zu schließen. Die ledigen Frauen werden als Ehegatten den ersten Mann annehmen, der um sie anhält. In der Reinheit des Bundes und ohne fleischliche Wollust.

So werden wir das Reich Gottes wiederbegründen.

Ja, der Herr, der Herr will es: es geschehe der Wille des Herrn, unsres Gottes.

Soll'n wir sein wie das Vieh, das Vieh im Stalle, das nie jemals gefragt wird, mit wem es sich will paaren

Wisset ihr, Frauen, Frauen von Münster, daß Hille sich hinausschlich, um Waldeck zu täten, wie Judith hat getötet Holofernes? Und wenn der Herr will, daß sie lebendig heimkehrt, soll'n wir erlauben, daß irgendein Mann sie zur Frau nähme und zwar gegen ihren Willen?

Nein, das darfnicht sein.

Divara

Der Engel der Offenbarung hat auf der Stirne Hille schon gezeichnet. Von einem einfachen Menschen kann nicht erwählt werden, wen der Herr selbst schon erwählt hat. Doch wär' es nicht richtiger, wenn sie selbst den Mann wählte, den sie heiraten will?

Chor der Frauen

Ja, und auch wir.

Divara

Und wenn mein Mann begehrt and're Frauen, muß der Herr uns erlauben, daß wir alle zueinander halten als wär'n wir Schwestern. Denn eine jede von uns wird um soviel einsamer noch sein, als die andern sein werden. Und nur zusammen werden wir das sein, was jede sein wird.

Knipperdollinck

Wenn die Zwänge eines Gesetzes, und kommt es auch von Gott, mehr Kraft hätten denn das Gesetz der Freiheit, das uns von Gott gekommen, dann stünde Gott gegen Gott.

Rothmann

Der Herr hat beschlossen, die Vielehe in Seiner Stadt wiederherzustellen, damit wir um so rascher die Zahl der hundertvierundvierzigtausend erreichen können. Auf daß der Engel der Offenbarung komme und uns zähle und zeichne.

Leiden

Der Wille des Herrn geschehe. Ich werde der erste sein, auszuwählen, danach wird die Reihe an Knipperdollinck sein, danach an Rothmann und schließlich an allen anderen Männern. Aber kein Mann wird mehr Frauen nehmen als ich.

Knipperdollinck

Ich schätze es höher, ausgewählt zu werden als auszuwählen. Ein Zeichen dafür, daß mir Verdienste zuerkannt werden, die zu haben, ich nicht immer gewiß bin.

Der Lahme

Oh, daß keine Frau mir zu sagen wage, daß sie mich nicht will. Lohm zwar bin ich, doch Prophet auch und durch und durch ein ganzer Mann. Denn Gott hat befohlen und ihr müßt ihm gehorchen, müßt gehorchen ihm und den Männern, die auf Erden seine Vertreter sind.

Leiden

(Zu Divara.) Du wirst die erste unter meinen Frauen sein, aber dich selbst mußt du den anderen gleich achten - Sandkörner, die das Meer umwälzt und mitführt wohin es will.
