Vigorous, energetic 4th
I bought this album because I confess, I already had it in vinyl and wanted a digital version. I always loved the energy Stokowski brought to the first movement and the longing he creates in the second (my favorite, no matter who conducts). I know it's not the purists' choice--I also have versions conducted by Ormandy and Bernstein. Each brings something different to the listener.
The Scriabin étude is a haunting piece, and Stokowski's transcription of it makes it a full orchestral confection. I particularly like the way the volume swells to fortissimo within the piece, then the soft ending with a single bell tone.
The orchestra from what I can tell has a good, balanced sound. I have only compliments for their skills.
To conclude, let me say that for fans of Stokowski, this album is mandatory. For fans of Tchaikovsky, this album is one to own along with a more standard interpretation of the Fourth Symphony. And certainly, no where else will you hear Scriabin's Étude in C-sharp minor played by an orchestra, sounding like this.more....
