Composer worth exploring
Madetoja's music is quiet and understated. There is an unmistakeable influence from Sibelius, but also from Finnish folk-music, the Russians and the French impressionists. All the works on this disc are very grateful to listen to, but the Second Symphony is a masterpiece. Quiet, pastoral and apparently unruffled for most of its length, it nevertheless has true symphonic flow and considerable emotional depths. The symphony is dedicated to the memory of Madetoja's brother, who died in the Finnish Civil War, and the symphony is similar to Vaughan Williams Pastoral Symphony in the way that sadness and horror lurk beneath a calm exterior. There are even muted trumpet calls as in the Vaughan Williams symphony. Highly recommended.more....
