Pleasant Music Expertly Rendered
The piano sonatas by Hummel, written in Beethoven's times, may perhaps lack the bite of the great master but are pleasant to listen to and expertly crafted. In their melodies and harmonies you find nothing really startling, their dynamics are a bit flat, and technically they are not very challenging.
They represent, however, the musical taste of the audiences of the time for whom Beethoven was too demanding. Ms. Chang does the works full justice. It is amazing how so many artists of Asiatic origin easily grasp the mood and temper of classical European music, and Ms. Chang is one of them. She is doing us a favour by bringing to our attention piano solo works of great charm.more....
