Strangers On A Train
This brand new collection is nothing short of spectacular. Sure, much of this material has been covered ad infinitum. The hook here is Maestro Mauceri’s authoritative grasp of the music. His intuitive sense of drama inexorably draws you in. You feel as if you were experiencing these works much the way audiences first encountered them via the films they supported. They are that fresh and vivid.
The orchestra is fully on board with taut, committed playing. This is no tepid “movie night at the symphony” outing, but a serious effort, respectful of the music’s intrinsic value. Danny Elfman’s contribution is reminiscent of the style he adopted during his formative series of collaborations with Tim Burton. What of the sound? It’s a model of clarity and immediacy, no small feat considering the scope and complexity of the forces employed.
Finally, the excellent liner notes are quite thorough and informative. Plaudits to Toccata Classics for underwriting this project.more....
