Grammy Winners Return
The return of Grammy award winners Brazilian Guitar Quartet to the recording studio is always cause for celebration. In this, their sixth album, they feature the crème de la crème of 20th century Spanish composers; Granados, de Falla, Rodrigo and more all have representative work presented here. Rooted, as they are, in the poly-cultural mix that early Spanish music has always been, most of the composers featured also show the influence, directly or indirectly, of French impressionism; the resulting sound manages to be both modern and historically grounded.
The fact that these composition, originally written for piano, end up sounding as though they’d always been intended for guitar is largely due to the excellent arrangements of BGQ member Tadeu do Amaral. His efforts were no doubt made easier by his long standing and intimate musical association with fellow virtuosi Everton Gloeden, Luiz Mantovani and Gustavo Costa; the group’s inclusion of two 8-string guitars enhances its harmonic range and adaptability and is an innovation with precedents dating back to the mid-19 century.
“Spanish Dances” by the Brazilian Guitar Quartet is a nearly perfect encapsulation of the spirit of modern Spanish music; alternately hushed and strident, lyrical and dissonant, it remains, like the BGQ, sure enough of itself to allow for outside influences, while staying true to its original nature. Music this great should really be on everyone’s wish list.
Highest Recommendation, 10 out of 10.
