Bacewicz Cello Concertos
Grazyna Bacewicz is one of the finest 20th century composers. Most American music lovers have never heard of her, but that is a function of the facts that 1) she is a woman, 2) she is Polish, and 3) she worked under the domination of the communist regime in Poland during the greater part of her career.
Her chamber music and her works for violin are particularly impressive. These two works for cello came from different phases of her career, and are quite different.
Concerto #1 is a fine example of her early neo-classical manner, and it is immediately attractive. Concerto #2 is a later work and somewhat more difficult to grasp. But both concertos are quite good and both repay careful attention.
The performances are by different forces. They both sound quite convincing. Since there is no competition for performances at the moment, you should not hesitate to purchase these if you enjoy modern cello concertos.more....
