Good historical playing of a Prokofiev rarity
Semyon Kotko (1940) was the first opera composed by Prokofiev during his Soviet period. The plot deals with a love story set in Ukraine during the civil war between Reds and Whites.
This CD contains the Orchestral Suite (Op. 81b) that Prokofiev composed soon afterwards. Prokofiev´s father owned land in Ukraine before the October revolution, and in his autobiography the composer recalls a happy childhood there. Such memories are likely evoked in the most lyrical movements of the score. This CD contains the suite played by the Berlin Radio Symphony in 1954, just one year after the composer's death.
The audio has been carefully restored for Naxos and the music is played with skill and warm affection. Recommended, even if you have one of the few modern versions.more....
