Cracking Koechlin

Composers are overlooked for lots of reasons. Some deserve it, but Charles Koechlin emphatically does not. If you think Villa-Lobos invented unusual instrumental combinations, think again. Here are two Septets for very different - some would say eccentric - groups. If you seek music for unusual instruments, here are two Sonatinas for oboe d'amore. And if you want music which gives you the flavour of the open air, listen to his Paysages et Marines (Landscapes and Seascapes) and wonder where the walls of your room have gone!

Both French ensembles are excellent as they advocate the music of their fellow countrymen. This album will not disappoint, try it!

Performances are clean and well phrased, with good sound. The opus number is 221, so it’s one of Koechlin’s last pieces. I found it inspiring to hear that admirable mind steadily at work right to the very end, making sense. © 2013 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Ensemble Initium and Ensemble Contraste share the performance assignments, and both ensembles sparkle with brilliance in realizing the works at hand. The compositions span most of Koechlin’s career…

I have to my knowledge not had the pleasure of hearing any of the works previously. I will be hearing them many times more via this marvelous disk. This would make a great introduction to the composer for those who are not familiar. It is most certainly a welcome addition to any Koechlin enthusiast’s library, or anyone wishing to explore some excellent examples of 20th century French chamber music. © 2012 Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review Read complete review
