Muti has a true affinity for Prokofiev…and he galvanizes the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Ambrosian Chorus to deliver a blood-curdling (in a good way) performance. The youthful and charming Sinfonietta is no mere make-weight either, but a substantial, neglected work that’s equally well played.
Muti’s Romeo and Juliet Suites, made in Philadelphia, was one of EMI’s most successful early digital productions. The sound is brightly lit but has tremendous impact, and the orchestra plays fabulously. This version of “The Death of Tybalt” never has been matched for sheer excitement…The lusciousness of the Balcony Scene, and the ponderous swing of the Knight’s Dance are also pretty hard to beat…this is a terrific
release that will certainly fill a gap in many collections. © 2012 ClassicsToday.com Read complete review
