…these short pieces are a sign of generosity from an artist to audience, a scoop of sorbet at the end of a well-executed meal.
…the Brodsky has assembled a collection of transcriptions by the group’s members. Included are whimsical and offbeat confections like the joyous
Zapateado of Pablo de Sarasate (complete with some foot-stamping by the players), the jaunty
Humoresque of Dvorák,
Beau Soir by Debussy, the rollicking March from Prokofiev’s
Love of Three Oranges, and the whimsical
La Capricieuse by Elgar. The group particularly shines on the
Blues from Ravel’s Violin Sonata, which extends the jazzy effects to all four instruments.
While it’s true that it’s
always better to “leave ‘em wanting more,” these encore pieces are more than welcomed into the quartet literature. © 2012 WQXR (New York) Read complete review
