Stephen Hough comforts me, in that his compositions are so healthy, meaty, intelligently crafted, and attractive. There’s no fluff, no pandering, no reliance on half-digested pop music.
Herbstlieder…is full of autumn melancholy and actual melodies and contains some of the most careful writing I’ve heard. The piano part is far better than in many 20th-Century songs. What an effective set!
The playing (and sound) is top-notch—the man must be grateful to hear his music performed so well. If you’ve been discouraged about the state of modern music, this may be the program you need to hear. © 2012
