Herreweghe is back on track

I think this is one of the most notable recordings by Herreweghe in recent times. I've heard it several times and it's remarkable in every way. Schicksalslied draws the character from much of Brahms' music.

Ann Hallenberg is flawless and smooth in the Alto Rhapsody, definitively a unique recording. I didn't know the Motet, Warum ist das Licht gegeben, but is impressive.

The Collegium Vocale Gent and Orchestre des Champs-Elysees under the direction of Philippe Herreweghe sound much better than in a long time (not even in Mahler), perhaps like in Bach's Motets and the Mass in B Minor BWV 232.

Herreweghe…laid out for us a superbly rich and eloquent example of Brahms’s art at its most sublime. The profound tranquillity of the outer sections is magically countered by the high drama of the central section in a way which is wholly unproblematical. Collegium Vocale Gent deliver…Warum ist das Licht gegeben with great breadth and an…awesome dynamic range which perfectly matches the intensity of the text…
