Born in Staffordshire, part of mid-England, Havergal Brian played the cello and violin by the age of twelve, and was in considerable demand as a church organist. His composition skills were largely self-taught, but he was to write 33 symphonies, 27 in the last 24 years of his long life. The martial vigour of his early overture, For Valour, contrasts with the imaginative comedy of Doctor Merryheart, a parody of Straussian programme music. The capricious and quirky side of Brian¡¦s nature is displayed in the two symphonies, yet the opening Adagio of the 11th is among his most profoundly expressive utterances.
