Nice Try
MUSIC FROM A TUDOR COURT – The Gift of Music An odd Elizabethan-era greatest hits package apparently intended by the issuing record company to be used as background music, this collection contains works by many of that instrument’s most prominent composers, both English and Continental. Unfortunately for the barely credited lutenists, Lynda Sayce and Mathew Spring, their very credible performances are marred by deficiencies in the recording process; lacking clarity and separation, the production here has an amateurish, done-on-the-cheap quality that does a disservice to repertoire and musicians alike. As a general introduction, “Music From a Tudor Garden” may hold some interest to those just learning about this era’s music or as background music for local theater groups taking on Elizabethan drama, but its muddy sound and nonexistent liner notes are unlikely to impress a more knowledgeable audience. 6 out of 10 - Oscar O.
