Dear Heroines
Serious collectors owe a debt of gratitude to composer, arranger, Carl Davis and his namesake record label. Maestro Davis has assembled a generous (76 minute) program of music culled from some of his finest efforts on behalf of film and television. All four selections involve female protagonists, hence the title. Note: These recordings are brand new, not simply drawn from the original soundstage sessions. The composer conducts one of England’s finest ensembles, the Philharmonia Orchestra. There are several significant solo turns on violin, viola, cello, piano and alto sax, all exquisitely rendered. What of the music per se? The writing is melodically appealing, formally assured and beautifully orchestrated. It clearly stands on its own as a self-contained listening experience. Sonics are fine: detailed, warm and spacious. The informative liner notes by Maestro Davis cap a terrific package.more....
