Shostakovich and the Movies
Shostakovich’s film scores (some 30 plus) offer a fascinating study in contrasts. On the one hand, the so-called public, Soviet style of the composer is manifested by the countless waltzes, polkas, galops, quasi folk tunes and banal ditties. Then there are the quintessential, searing, elegiac largos, sardonic scherzos and propulsive allegros which recall some of the finest moments in the symphonies. There has certainly been no shortage of recordings devoted to this material. Most notably releases by Naxos, Chandos, Decca, Capriccio and Signum come to mind.
Some years back RCA tried its hand with a distinguished series conducted by Jose Serebrier. This current release on Delos was originally released in the 1990’s on the Russian Disc label. Conductor, Walter Mnatsakanov and the Byelorussian Radio/TV Symphony State Cinematographic Orchestra turn in perfectly acceptable, idiomatic performances of suites drawn from four films. There are perhaps more polished and in a few instances, more comprehensive versions currently available. Nevertheless, the raw energy and verve exhibited by these forces is irresistible and well worth the ride. The wide ranging sonics occasionally tend toward coarseness in the tuttis but are otherwise quite good. Recommended.more....
