Mozart, Symphony 39, Symphony 41, Gardiner
Since the market is more than flooded with recordings of Mozart's last three symphonies, one wonders what hope there is for this CD, from Soli Deo Gloria, to gain even a foothold. Perhaps these performances on period instruments will give it a competitive edge. For those music lovers who prefer string players to use controlled vibrato and wind players to have access to modern instruments, the sound on this CD may not be exactly what they are used to. However, the overall effect is still acceptable. The performances are excellent from the standpoint of their musical philosophy (i.e., period performance practices).
The CD comes in a trifold cardboard package. Sturdy plastic CD jewel cases are so cheap nowadays that there is really no excuse for a manufacturer who tries to save a few pennies by use of this design of packaging. The CD slides out far too easily, and could fall to the floor and become scratched or be accidentally lost. Apart from an irritating string of dangling participial phrases on the ends of sentences, Duncan Druce’s program notes are well written and informative.
To sum up, performances per se are excellent; recording quality is fine; program notes are helpful; packaging is inferior.
