Inside Beethoven
I had already admired Vanska's Beethoven symphony cycle with the Minnesota Orchestra and so was looking forward to this issue. This is the first time I have heard Yevgheny Sudbin play although I had heard of him... and what a wonderful surprise! In both concertos he seems right inside the music finding delicate nuances of personal (but not gratuitous) interpretation. There have been several other interesting Beethoven Concerto cycles recently-- Paul Lewis, Ronald Brautigam and Olli Mustonen to name but three. But Sudbin and Vanska get off to a flying start with this issue... I can't wait for the others! This cycle looks like being set to become one of my favourites. Strongly recommended!more....
