Brilliant Mixture of Fast Paced Movement and Beautfiul Lullabyes
This is a fantastic work that includes some wonderfully fast paced and up tempo pieces that can then transcend into a beautiful lullaby. There are even some movements that have a tinge of a devious plot being afoot. I enjoyed the roller coaster ride of emotions that was precisely performed by the orchestra. Such a warm assembly of instruments as well.more....
Pierne piano concerto and orchestral music
Apart from his ballet "Cydalise et le Chevre-Pied" (Cydalise and Goat-Foot), Gabriel Pierne has been largely neglected compared with other Romantic-era French composers, such as Debussy, Faure, and Ravel. Those who are courageous to explore his music will surely find rare gems that are unworthy of neglect.
This CD contains Pierne's incidental music for a production of Pierre Loti's 1897 novel "Ramuntcho"; the music beautifully depicts the French Basque scenery and way of life. Happily, incidental music to stage plays has a knack of surviving although the plays themselves disappear; Grieg's "Peer Gynt" and Bizet's "L'Arlesienne" are two examples.
Similarly, the music to "Ramuntcho" certainly deserves to be heard, for it is delightful. Pierne's Piano Concerto is one of literally dozens of Romantic-era piano concertos that are too often sadly neglected or worse, totally ignored. Happily, however, several versions of this piano concerto are now available. If you don't have a version, this one is brilliantly performed and splendidly recorded, and the rest of the CD - the "March of the Little Lead Soldiers" and two "Ramuntcho" suites - is just as enjoyable.
The "Divertissement sur un theme pastoral" title is given incorrectly as "Divertissements sur un theme pastoral," but this hardly detracts from the music's charm. If you don't know the music of Pierne, I encourage you to try it!
