Cellist Simon Cobcroft enjoys a diverse musical life that encompasses solo, chamber and orchestral performances in Australia, Asia and Europe. Currently sub-principal cello with the Malaysian Philharmonic he has also appeared regularly with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bournemouth Symphony and as solo cellist with Denmark’s Esbjerg Ensemble.
A committed chamber musician, Simon performs frequently in the chamber music series of the Dewan Filharmonik in Kuala Lumpur’s iconic Petronas Twin Towers. He has appeared as soloist and chamber musician in the music festivals of Aldeburgh (Snape Maltings) and Salzburg (Schloss Konzert), and the Australian National Academy of Music’s Autumn Music Festival in Melbourne. Notable concerto appearances include Tan Dun’s cello concerto “Snow in June” with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Elgar and Shostakovich 2nd Concertos with Orchestra Victoria and the Dvořák cello concerto at the Musici Artis festival in Brussels. In 2004 Simon made the world première recording of the R.O. Morris Suite for Cello and Orchestra with the Kazakhstan Philharmonic for Toccata Classics. Simon plays on a fine English cello made in 1840 by Thomas Kennedy.
