Ruth Etting

Singer
(1897-1978)

Ruth Etting was born in David City, Nebraska. After graduating from high school she moved to Chicago and attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts where she studied costume design. Her design experience led her to work as a chorus girl at the Marigold Gardens in Chicago. Etting parlayed her chorus girl position into that of singer. She was soon billed as “The Sweetheart of Chicago,” and Florenz Ziegfeld called her “the greatest singer of songs.” The public agreed and she was voted radio’s top female singer.

Etting helped popularize “You’re the Cream in My Coffee” (1923), “Love Me or Leave Me” (1928), “Mean to Me” (1929), “Ten Cents a Dance” (1930), “Good Night Sweetheart” (1931), and “Shine on Harvest Moon” (1944).
