Rudolf Laubenthal

Rudolf Laubenthal initially studied medicine at the universities of Munich, Strasbourg and Berlin, while also taking singing lessons, not least with Lilli Lehmann in Berlin. He commenced his professional career as a concert singer, making a considerable impression at the 1912 Bach Festival at Eisenach.

Laubenthal moved steadily through the repertoire of tenor roles, from lyric to Italian heroic and finally to Wagner. More varied parts included Lorenzo / Fra Diavolo, Raoul / Les Huguenots, Arnold / Guillaume Tell and Radamès / Aida, as well as the title roles in Gounod’s Faust, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Meyerbeer’s Le Prophète and Méhul’s Joseph. In 1916 he sang in the first performance of Felix Weingartner’s opera Dame Kobold.
