Rico Gulda

Pianist Rico Gulda, the youngest son of Friedrich Gulda, was born in Zurich, Switzerland. He grew up to become trilingual, commanding not only German but Japanese and English languages. Gulda began to learn the piano at the age of five and from his twelfth year became a pupil of Ludwig Hoffmann. Later he graduated from the masterclass of Noel Flores at the Vienna Musikhochschule. He also participated in mastercourses with Viktor Merzhanov, Dimitri Bashkirov and Oleg Maisenberg and rounded off his training with his famous father.

Rico Gulda has appeared as a guest artist at festivals including the Munich Klaviersommer, the Ruhr Piano Festival, the Bregenz Spring, the Vienna Festwochen, the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival and the Danube Festival. He has also appeared in concert in Europe, Asia and the United States of America.

The first high points of his career were his début in the Great Hall of the Vienna Musikverein in a programme of Beethoven; the 1998 New Year concert of the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg in the Salzburg Great Festival Hall; his Japanese orchestral début in the Orchard Hall in Tokyo and, finally, his first performance of Mozart, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

There have followed recitals and solo appearances throughout Europe and the Far East. After the success of his first Japanese tour in late 1996 with Mozart piano concertos, he has returned regularly to Japan, his mother’s home country. He made his American début in Washington and New York in 1999.
