The Argentinian tenor Raúl Giménez made his professional début as Erhesto in Donizelli’s Don Pasquale at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in the 1980–81 season. He made his first appearance in Europe at the Wexford Festival in 1984 in Cimarosa’s Le astuzie femminili. Specialising in Italian repertoire of the nineteenth century, he appeared in Venice, Naples and other Italian cities in Rossini’s Armida, Otello and Tancredi, and in Rome in Mozart’s Il repastore and in La sonnambula. He made his London Covent Garden début in 1990 as Ernesto, a rôle he had also undertaken in Dallas. A series of important engagements in major opera houses has continued, with a 1993 début at La Scala, Milan, in Tancredi, and a parallel career in the concert hall.
