PostClassical Ensemble

PostClassical Ensemble is an experimental musical laboratory, testing the limits of orchestral programming. The ensemble’s tagline, “More than an Orchestra,” refers to the thematic scope and exceptional formats of its concerts, and aspiration to embrace collaborative and educational activities not normally associated with orchestras. PostClassical Ensemble aims to impact nationally and internationally. Above all, it aims to address and cultivate an inquisitive audience, hungry for deeper engagement.

PostClassical Ensemble programming makes an uncompromising mission statement. Little standard repertoire is included. Though no conscious repertoire philosophy was ever promulgated, the ensemble rarely plays music composed before 1900. It specializes in music of the Americas and of Spain. The composer it has most performed, by far, is Silvestre Revueltas: the ensemble believes that his time will come, and soon.

Many works—by such composers as Zhou Long, Mario Lavista, Ana Lara, Daniel Schnyder, David Taylor, even Manuel de Falla—are world or local premières. Emphasis is also placed on “PostClassical” performers like David Taylor, Min Xiao-fen, David Krakauer, and Genadi Zagor who—no less than the ensemble itself—explode the traditional boundaries of “classical music.”

Folk music (Hungarian, Chinese), gamelan, flamenco are all genres sampled by PCE concerts. Film, dance, theater are frequent components. All PCE concerts incorporate lighting design, pre-concert performances, and post-concert conversations. The ensemble enjoys close partnerships with the Film Division of the National Gallery, Georgetown University, and the Music Center at Strathmore.
