Bred and born in Detroit, Paul Ganson received his Bachelor and Master of Arts from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Prior to joining the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Principal Bassoonist in 1969, he was a member of the orchestras in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Toledo, Ohio and Dallas, Texas. Shortly after joining the DSO he was appointed the Founding Administrator of what is now the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra, and for the next twenty years he also led the campaign to save, restore and use Detroit’s famed and fabled Orchestra Hall. In 1999 he became the DSO’s Historian, and in August 2004, at the conclusion of his 35th year, he retired as a musician with the DSO. He is now writing the history of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for Wayne State University Press.
