Maurice Renaud (1861 - 1933)

Maurice Renaud studied singing for a year at the Paris Conservatoire, after which he entered the Brussels Conservatoire where he was a pupil of Joseph Cornelis and Henri Warnots. He made his operatic stage debut in 1883 at the Théâtre de la Monnaie, Brussels, remaining a member of this opera company until 1890. He sang Beckmesser / Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in its Belgian premiere in 1890 and took part also in several first performances including Litolff’s Les Templiers (1886) and Reyer’s Sigurd (1884) and Salammbô (1890).

At the Opéra-Comique in Paris, which Renaud joined in 1890, he made his debut as Karnac / Le Roi d’Ys. He also took the title roles in Don Giovanni and Der fliegende Holländer and appeared as Scarpia / Tosca. The following year, 1891, Renaud first appeared at the Paris Opera, as Nelusco / L’Africaine. He was a leading baritone with this company until 1902, returning often as a guest until 1914. His roles included Beckmesser, Alberich / Der Ring des Nibelungen, Telramund / Lohengrin, Wolfram / Tannhäuser, Iago / Otello, Amonasro / Aida and the title roles in Don Giovanni and Rigoletto. Premieres in which he participated included Henri Maréchal’s Deidamia (1893), Augusta Holmès’s La Montagne noire (1895), Alfred Bruneau’s Messidor (1897) and F.L.R. Joncières’s Lancelot (1900).
