Update me on new releases by Richardson

Mark Richardson

"Well worth acquiring by lovers of Italian Baroque sacred music and choral-music fans." review of the choir's recording of Caldara's Missa Dolorosa on Naxos.

The Swiss Radio Choir of Lugano was founded by Edwin Loehrer in 1936.

After over forty years under his leadership, ten years under Francis Travis and three with André Ducret, the Choir was placed in the hands of Diego Fasolis in 1993.

Over the years the choir has gained a  worldwide reputation for excellence and range, particularly through its many radio performances and prolific studio recordings, mainly of works in the Italian repertoire from the sixteenth through to the eighteenth century.

The Choir appears in a number of guises and formations -  which vary from small local madrigal ensembles to groups of over sixty singers drawn from various nations.

In 1998, the choir went on tour with Bach's Motets, winning first prize at the Flanders Festival in Bruges. It was at once invited to - and indeed did - repeat its success with Monteverdi's Il Vespro della Beata Vergine in 1999 and, the following year, with Handel's Messiah.

Being a radio ensemble, the choir has a very large repertoire which spans hundreds of compositions from over six centuries and, in more than sixty years of creative life, it has amassed a huge archive of productions.

For Naxos, the choir has committed to disc the Missa Dolorosa
