Update me on new releases by Thompson

Marcus Thompson

Marcus Thompson started his music studies on the violin aged six, entering The Juilliard Pre- College under Louise Behrend at fourteen. He then went on to study the viola and viola d’amore primarily with Walter Trampler at The Juilliard School, becoming the first to earn a doctorate in viola performance. A performance of Hindemith’s Sonata for Viola d’amore and Piano by Trampler inspired him to learn the instrument and appraise early performing practices, some of which (flexibility of tone colour, limited vibrato, etc.) permeate his playing of twentieth-century repertoire. Like many other conservatory-trained musicians he has devoted a good portion of his time to teaching further generations of string players at the college that launched his own playing career as well as at other US institutions.

Thompson’s performing career, which began in Carnegie Hall with a New York Young Concert Artist’s Series appearance, has involved chamber music amongst his many solo engagements, playing with numerous well-known ensembles and performing at a US Presidential Inaugural Concert. As a soloist he performed Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante with Yehudi Menuhin and Hindemith’s viola d’amore concerto, Kammermusik No. 6, with the Philadelphia Orchestra. In honour of Hindemith’s centenary he performed the composer’s sonatas for viola and viola d’amore in Boston.
