Update me on new releases by Artymiw

Lydia Artymiw

Lydia Artymiw’s parents were from the Ukraine and young Lydia began piano lessons at the age of four. Her father, a pharmacist, was very interested in music and he encouraged his daughter, attending every lesson and practice session until she was thirteen. Between the ages of six and twelve she studied with Freda Pastor Berkowitz, who taught at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, and at the age of eight performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, continuing to give public performances during her childhood. Artymiw graduated from high school aged fifteen, and received a Bachelor of Music degree at eighteen from the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. It was not until she attended the Marlboro Music Festival in 1972 that she began to lose the sense of isolation engendered by her formative years of study. She studied piano with Gary Graffman for twelve years (beginning at the age of thirteen) and participated in many competitions including the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1978 (where she gained third place). She has performed with many great orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Philadelphia, Minnesota, Cleveland, Munich Philharmonic and BBC Northern Orchestras. In Europe she has performed in many major cities, including London, Paris, Berlin, Rome and Milan; and toured the Far East.
