A pupil of Normand Lockwood at Oberlin and after army service of Howard Hanson and Bernard Rogers at Eastman, Peter Mennin taught at the Juilliard School, where he was appointed president after a period as director of the Peabody Conservatory. As a composer he gave much attention to works on a larger scale, many of them showing some affinity with the work of more traditional European contemporaries.
Orchestral Music
Peter Mennin left nine symphonies, the first of which he withdrew. His other orchestral works include a Flute Consertino and concertos for cello and for piano.
