Lewis Morrison studied clarinet at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in Glasgow and the Guildhall School of Music in London. On completion of his studies he returned to his native Scotland where he became a member of the newly formed Scottish Chamber Orchestra. During his tenure as principal clarinet he performed the Mozart and Weber Clarinet Concertos with the orchestra and also performed many chamber works. He was also, concurrently, a member of the New Music Group of Scotland. In 1990 Lewis Morrison was invited to perform the new Maxwell Davies Clarinet Concerto, which was a great honour and a considerable technical challenge.
