Leonid Vechkhayzer

Pianist, organist and educator Leonid Vechkhayzer was born in the city of Baku, capital of Azerbaijan. After study at the Azerbaijan State Musical College, in 1978 he moved to Kazan, capital of Tatarstan where he entered the Tatar State Conservatory to the studio of Professor P.K. Abdulin, Pupil Artist of Tatarstan. After graduation he joined the Military Choir of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR. With this ensemble he toured throughout the former republics of the Soviet Union. In 1984 he was appointed as an accompanist to the A. Sveshnikov State Chorus in Moscow. At the same time he was invited to join the faculty of another well-known music institution, the Moscow M. Balakirev School of Arts for Gifted Children. He soon won a reputation in Moscow as an accompanist and started performing with the folk- musician, domrist Sergey Lukin, who now holds the title of Pupil Artist of the Russian Federation. During their eighteen years of collaboration, the duo has performed throughout Russia and abroad. In 2000 Leonid Vechkhayzer and Sergey Lukin became Laureates of the First Prize of the prestigious Russian Cup of the North competition named in Arkhangelsk. He continues his collaboration with musicians as a chamber player and an accompanist. He also teaches organ and his students now include many competition winners. In addition he is a chorus-master in two Russian Orthodox Churches in Moscow.
