In a distinguished international career as a soloist, British clarinettist Janet Hilton has created a substantial discography, having recorded much of the clarinet repertoire for Chandos, with other CDs on the EMI, BBC, ASV and Clarinet Classics labels. Her recordings include most of the clarinet masterpieces by Weber, Brahms and Mozart, English music by Bliss, Bax and Vaughan Williams, concertos by Nielsen, Copland, Stanford, Malcolm Arnold, Finzi and four contemporary British composers who wrote specially for her. She had a long association on record and in the concert hall with the Lindsay String Quartet and has also recorded with Peter Frankl, Nobuko Imai and Keith Swallow, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with Neeme Järvi, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra with Mathias Bamert, the Ulster Orchestra with Vernon Handley, the Bournemouth Sinfonietta with Norman del Mar and the BBC Scottish Symphony with Rumon Gamba. In concerts, Janet Hilton has played with most major British orchestras and at festivals including Edinburgh, Cheltenham and the BBC Promenade Concerts, and internationally in many European countries, the United States and Canada. A distinguished teacher, she is a professor of clarinet at the Royal College of Music, London, where for eleven years she was also Head of Woodwind. She has given master-classes at several American universities and the Paris Conservatoire and served on the juries of leading competitions in England, Ireland, Italy and Canada.
