Jane Alexander (b1939)

One of America’s most distinguished actresses, Jane Alexander has four times been nominated for an Academy Award, is a winner of Broadway’s coveted Tony Award while receiving six additional Tony nominations, and has received Emmy and TV Critics Circle Awards for her television performances. Among her best-known starring appearances were in the play, The Great White Hope, directed by Edwin Sherin, her portrayal of Eleanor Roosevelt in two acclaimed television dramas about Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt, and her Oscar-nominated rôles in the films The Great White Hope, All the President’s Men, Kramer vs. Kramer and Testament. She has appeared in over a hundred stage rôles and more than fifty films.

In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Jane Alexander the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, the organization that oversees arts funding in the United States. Her book, Command Performance: An Actress in the Theater of Politics, describes her years in Washington. Recently Jane Alexander performed in concert three rare melodramas for Yehuda Hanani’s Close Encounters with Music series, narrating texts by Friedrich Hebbel and Percy Bysshe Shelley to the music of Robert Schumann.
